While visiting the Half Moon Bay Lodge, be sure to explore the tide pools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. Established in 1969, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is one of the richest intertidal areas on the California coast. It's best to see the tide pools during the low minus tides which expose the rocky shoreline to view. This rocky seashore hosts a living community of marine life that is of great interest to visitor and naturalist alike. A variety of seaweed, crabs, sponges, sea anemones, mollusks, starfish and fish make their homes in the inter-tidal; that area between low and high tide. Over 25 new species have been discovered at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. The Reserve is set aside to protect this complex but fragile community for us and future generations. Within the reserve, most marine life is protected. The Reserve is popular with school and community groups for its educational value.
Facilities include picnic tables, restrooms, and a parking area. Interpretative exhibits and programs are available. Tide pool walks are available at low tides. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is open every day of the year including all holidays. It opens daily at 8:00 A.M. The closing time varies by time of year.
